QQ7

About

The purpose of the “QQ7” design project was to build an IMS boat that would be one of the fastest of the smaller craft, with a good rating, competitive in races yet not spartan, but suitable for small cruises.

The Yacht

Compared to the two 40’ IMS racer/cruisers that preceded it in time, the “Mon Ami” and the “Magic Touch”, the new 42’ is a little longer and decidedly more of a racer, without, however, paying for this in terms of being excessively basic. The extremely clean-cut lines of the deck with open stern on the “Magic Touch” leave enough room to study a more exposed rig, which is more suited to racing use. The sporting orientation also justifies some choices for the layout inside, which is symmetrical and structural, where racing requirements are met in the bow area, with large sail lockers that convert to a bunk or which can be used for storage. Cruising use, if any, or transfers between the different race fields, is aided by the presence of two comfortable double bunks in the stern which, although minimalist, are also very functional; there is a light and airy dinette, a large bathroom and last but not least, a good engine. The versatility of the design can also be appreciated in the system of wardrobe doors, which become doors to the different rooms, making it possible to create open space areas that work to the advantage of sail changing operations during a race, as well as to restore the division of spaces that is necessary when cruising.

Characteristics

The choices in terms of materials used for furnishings and fittings, have taken into account the practical nature required during a race and by the aesthetic sense that is appreciated while cruising. The data bank acquired while monitoring the two previous 40’ craft has made it possible to optimise the appendages on the “QQ7” and to design a rudder with a high aspect ratio and a blade keel for the maximum performance, close hauled. The sail plan, which is generously sized, was conceived to race as well as possible with IMS regulations; carbon mast with large genoa and fractional rig to allow better aerodynamics close hauled. The look and the graphics of “QQ7” invite into the world of yacht racing: the white hull with electric blue lines provides a pleasant frame for sponsors’ logos. The boat is built in glass fibre composite and Kevlar with carbon reinforcements, as are the bulkheads and furnishing elements, which are therefore an integral part of the structure.
